Given how economically and strategically vital the Panama Canal was (and still is to this very day), what if the United States simply decided to take all of Panama instead of just the Canal Zone?
Say the U.S. military stages a false flag operation to blame Colombia and occupies Panama to "protect" it. Or maybe the U.S. puts several pro-annexation Panamanians in charge of the region to make the movement seem authentic. Regardless of how it occurs, Panama becomes the newest state admitted into the Union in the early 1900s/early 1910s.
What are the ramifications of this? How does Panama being a U.S. state affect the U.S. economically, socially, and politically? How does the rest of the world (especially Central and South American nations) react?
This is my first post here; I have no idea how this will turn out.
