What if the Soviets won the Cold War. Monsieur Z already had a video where he explained on how the Soviet Union could have won the cold war. It is based on my personal opininon and would likely come out a bit unrealistic,but neverthenless,I hope you will like it. Our story starts in the year 1947. The Soviet Union had US had crushed Japan and Germany,but the "Sinews of Peace" speech officially begins the era of hostility,paranoia and competition,later known as the Cold War. The civil war in Greece and China continue as the On his tour through the nation,somewhere in Macedonia leader of Yougoslavia Josep Bros Tito is assasinated by the NKVD agent dressed as the member of the Greek Royalist Forces. The outraged Yougoslavs continue their support for the Communists in Greece,not turning away from the Soviet Bloc,giving it free access to Medditeranian and later the Aegean Sea,joining the recently formed COMECON-economic alliance between the Socialist States.
Meanwhile,Mao proclaims the creation of the People's Republic of China,shifting the balance of the world towards the Soviets by 1949. The Korean war goes just like in our timeline,in a stalemate,while Vietnam becomes divided as well,with the Socialist North and Capitalist South. The First Wave of Decolonization begins with India and Indochina getting independent,however,the Africa still remaining under the Control of the European powers. The Marshall Plan is still in action,and the USSR still rebuilds Eastern Europe,and the 1950 is marked with the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation,a military alliance to counter the Soviet influence. The Soviet access to the Medditeranian and the neutrality of Turkey benefits the Red Economy,as well as the China,thanks to the Soviet aid growing stronger each day. Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin dies a bit later on 5th December 1953,which proves crucial to the coming decades. In his final months he appointed his deputee-Maksimillianovich Georgy Malenkov as his successor,instead of Khruschev. the struggle within the party after Death of Stalin ends with the victory of Beria-Malenkov-Molotov coalition,with Malenkov in the chair of the Premier,and Beria with Malenkov pulling the strings. The last good news (for the USSR)of the year would be the rise of Baathists in Egypt.
The following years would see the Soviet influence slowly expanding in Africa,Middle East and Asia,however the Soviets themselves being more focused on the internal problems. Malenkov would likely start a much smaller process of Destalinization,being way more carefull in his speeches,and wont lead to the mass amnesties of the Gulag prisoners,like Khruschev did,in this case,we might either see no Budapest Uprising of 1956,or it being on a much smaller scale. Same with Czechoslovakia,without Otto Sik(thanks to the watchfull eyes of Beria and constantly working Molotov) the reforms in 1965 would not take place,and therefore,we might not see the Prague Uprising in 1968. Without getting rid of the Cadres Rotation policies,the Soviet bueracracy might end up more flexible and less corrupted. On the International scale,the Soviets win the Congo war,the Cuban revolution and the missile crisis still occurs,and the soviet influence is spreading throughout the world. The United States are stuck in the Vietnam War,giving the birth to the Hippies and Counter Culture movements. In Chile-Salvador Alliende,not without Soviet help gets in power,and begins his projet of Cybersin. By the 1970,the World might look like this.
However,the fate of the Soviet Union,and it victory remained in the hands of one man-Viktor Mihailovich Glushkov
Ideas about automated management of the planned economy were already expressed in the 1950s. In 1956, several proposal were made to introduce computers into management of industry, and in 1959, the head of the Computer center of the Ministry of defense, Colonel Anatoly Kitov, proposed his project under the name "Red book". He intended to combine all computers in a Single state network of computing centers (EGSVTS), which would be headed by the State Committee for management improvement (gksu or Goskomupr of the USSR). In a note addressed to Malenkov Kitov wrote:
”The creation of the EGSVC will significantly simplify the planning process: at the moment, the planned tasks lag behind the real capabilities and needs of enterprises for 2-3 years, due to huge paperwork. Computer centers combined in a single network will allow you to see the real situation with a delay of only 2-3 weeks.“ Glushkov supported Kitov's ideas and managed to interest the then head of Gosplan Alexey Kosygin, who in 1962 authorized the start of work on creating a network of computer centers. This required the creation of a fundamentally new series of computers, which Glushkov was involved in the development. In 1963, Glushkov visited 100 sites, from factories to mines and farms, to have the fullest understanding of the needs of the national economy, was allowed to work in the state planning Commission, CSO, Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of trade, with the result that by 1964, was born the project of a computer network, comprising some 100 major centres in industrial cities and economic centers, connected by broadband communication channels circuit-switched messages related to 20,000 centres of enterprises and organizations. It was planned to create a data Bank and develop a system of mathematical models for managing the economy. By 1970, the project received its final name-OGAS (State-wide automated system for accounting and processing information).According to Glushkov's calculations, the implementation of the OGAS project took about 15 years and 20 billion rubles, but its implementation would have brought the state a profit of at least 100 billion, thus covering all costs. To begin with, it was proposed to conduct an experiment on the introduction of an automated system within a single enterprise, and then to extend it to the whole country. The Lviv TV factory was chosen as a" test site " for testing the OGAS — in 1964, it was used to create the ASUP (Automated enterprise management system) "Lviv", and in 1967 it was put into operation. At the same time, a new computer "Ukraine" was being developed, the structure of which was fundamentally different from the classic von Neumann model and did not depend on the amount of hardware.
The creation of a national computer network seriously alarmed many both inside and outside the USSR. So, in the 1970s, the Washington post newspaper published an article by Ukrainian emigrant Viktor Zorza "punch Card controls the Kremlin", which said: "the Tsar of Soviet Cybernetics, academician V. M. Glushkov, proposes to replace the Kremlin's leaders with computers." Indeed, the idea of creating the OGAS for many in the leadership of the Soviet Union meant the threat of building a parallel network of management, which made numerous branch and statistical offices unnecessary. Especially negative was the attitude towards it in the CSO and the Ministry of Finance. since the "automation of the economy" threatened to reveal the machinations of these departments with the figures of planned indicators — as a result, only from 1966 to 1976, for the first 10 years of the implementation of the OGAS in the USSR, five Finance Ministers were replaced. In November 1969, at a meeting of secretaries of regional committees, chairmen of regional Executive committees, secretaries of the Central Committee of the Communist parties and chairmen of the Councils of Ministers of the republics, there was a conflict between the Chairman of Gosplan Baibakov, who opposed the creation of the OGAS, and Kosygin. On December 15, the Plenum of the Central Committee of the CPSU dismissed Baibakov from his post and appointed Nikolai Yegorychev, a former mayor of Moscow and one of the leaders of the reformers, to replace him, which meant the continuation of "automation".
By the mid-1970s, the OGAS began to take its final form — the country's largest cities, businesses, and scientific institutions were United by a network of computing centers. According to Glushkov's plan the unified computer system was built in five stages:
1967-1968-creation of the Moscow — Leningrad network»;
by 1969-connecting to the network of the largest centers within a radius of 800 km (Gorky, Minsk, Tallinn, Plesetsk cosmodrome, etc.);
by 1970, the network spread to the Volga region, the Baltic States, Ukraine and the Urals, as well as the creation of two new "centers" in Siberia (Krasnoyarsk-Tselinograd), Central Asia (Alma-ATA-Stalinabad) and the far East (Blagoveshchensk-Vladivostok);
by 1972, the Union of three "centers" into a single system with the connection to it of all the Republican capitals and major cities (Ashgabat, Baku, Yerevan, Samarkand, Tbilisi, etc.);
by 1977 — connecting to the network of smaller centers (Penza, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Yakutsk, etc.), as well as laying bypass cables (for example, by 1975 it was planned to link Baku and Ashgabat into one "node"). And while the Soviet Union continued its path for automated computerized future,the United States were kicked out of Vietnam,the Iranian Revolution,thanks to the efforts of KGB and China(Which in this timeline wont have a split with the Soviets),led to the Left Islamic Coalition seize power,the Third Indo-Pakistani war ended with the victory of India,and signing the Indo-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation,bringing another Country into the Soviet Sphere,failed coup of Augusto Pinochet and series of Israeli-Arab wars,which drew half of Middle eastern Countries to the Soviet Side,while Saudi Arabia officially imposing an oil embargo on the US,with the Iran secured,and India in the sphere,the Pakistani intervention in the Afganistan is limited,and while the Soviets enter the country with their armies,they face much less resistance than in our timeline. The World by 1980
While Soviets slowly built up their Empire,the United States is in the state of slow decline.The Apollo 10 program ends in a complete disaster and leads to the death of the entire crew, consisting of three astronauts. The cause of the tragedy was the failure of the parachute ejection system, when the dome did not open when entering the atmosphere, which led to the spacecraft hitting the earth at full speed. Responsibility was assigned to NASA. The engineers concluded that hundreds of errors were made in the design of the ship, as well as weather conditions were not taken into account at launch. The reason was haste due to unwillingness to concede to the USSR in the space race. The President declared a day of national mourning and closed the Apollo program.The Soviet Union lands the first people on the moon. On August 22 1970, husband and wife Andriyan Nikolayev and Valentina Tereshkova step on the surface of the satellite. Soviet leader Georgy Malenkov communicates with the astronauts on the phone and says the historic words: "You have raised the human race and the Soviet Union to a new height. Your action has once again underlined that our country is an advanced state in the world." This event deals a strong blow to the prestige of the United States and its space program. After Kennedy's famous speech to Congress in 1961, NASA spent about $ 29 billion to get ahead of the Reds and failed. Many opponents of the government accuse the government of "reckless spending" on something unattainable, especially at the height of the Vietnam war. There are first fears that the country will run out of money resources when they are so needed. The mass scandals of corruption,mismanagement and red scare become common topic of the dialogue amongst the american population,while the Economic Stagnation turns into a slow decay,with factories closing everywhere and the country itself slowly,very slowly turning into one giant Detroit under the weight of spreading Soviet influence,economic sanctions,sustaining its allies,proxy wars and dissatisfaction of the population.
The period from 1980 to 1990 would be known as the "Decade of Failrue" famous for the bold actions of the USSR on the International Arena and shrinking the American Sphere of influence. By 1982,the Soviets had mostly finished their project of automatised planned economy and began cementing their control over the Warsaw pact and Comecon by spreading the network of the OGAS into Eastern Europe and China,while increasing the aid programms to the Third World,solidifying their contorl in Africa,and giving funds to new socialist movements throughout the world,slowly dominating the General Assembly of the United Nations,revolutions in Nicaragua,preventing American intervention into Panama,but the biggest Soviet success happened during the Falklands War,when the KGB through Chile began funding the Argentinian MIC,prolonging the war for 2 months,then throwing several accusations and material aid in form of American weaponry stolen and captured during the Vietnam war. The sight of American weapons in Argentinian ports frustrated the British leading to the Anglo-American split and Brittain leaving NATO,becoming neutral power being close to the nationalistic chauvinism. Progressive Party victory in Peru and Equador shaken the American hegemony on South America,Taiwan,Phillipines,South Korea and Africa,none of those places develops even by a bit,as the American investments dont come into those countries,as America itself is trying to hold its nation together,however now involved in another series of Proxy Wars in Latin Americs,notably Brazil,Venezuela and Columbia,where the left-wing governments continue to rise up following the general disorder in the economy and civil rights.
The Point of No Return to the American Influence was the Mexican Financial Crisis of 1996 and disputed victory of the Mexican Communist Party which stabilized the country,brought it into the Soviet Sphere and acted as a point of delivering the Communist propaganda directly into the US,giving the way to the Progressivists,Left Anarchists,Social Democrats and others. In Europe,situation was no different,as the European powers now had only one stable market for their goods in face of the Soviet Union. The meeting between Soviet,East German and West German leaders in December 1999 ends the Berlin Wall,giving the West Berlin into the hands of the DDR. Rise of Morales and Chavez in Bolivia and Venezuela leads to the Left-wing movement victory in Brazil by 2001,Italy,Spain,Portugal,Denmark and Norway leaving NATO in period from 2002 to 2005. The end of Cold War happened on 25th of December 2008,with the handshake of American President and Soviet Premiere,officially ending the conflit started in the 1946,and recognition of USSR as the sole Superpower on the planet.
The reason for this was simple-World Financial Crisis,or the Final Breath of Capitalism,as it was described in the Soviet history books,the American economy crashed,and with it-the remaining American friendly regimes. The rise of both radical left and right wing movement began shaking the foundation of US itself,and the appearance of the Soviet Army in Mexico and Cuba,Chinese in Korea,and movement of Polish and East German armies worries the entire globe. But that is another story.
